Ho-Chi-Minh-Stadt ist die größte Stadt und das wirtschaftliche Zentrum Vietnams. Unter ihrem alten Namen Saigon, der weiterhin parallel zu Ho-Chi-Minh-Stadt verwendet wird, war sie bis zum April 1975 Hauptstadt der Republik Vietnam. Die Nordvietnamesische Volksarmee besetzte im März/April 1975 Südvietnam und Ende April 1975 dessen Hauptstadt Saigon; damit endete der Vietnamkrieg. Saigon wurde 1976 nach dem nordvietnamesischen Staatschef Hồ Chí Minh (1890–1969) benannt.
